History
1976: Structural Testing Services (STS) is founded in Romulus, MI by five former Ford Motor Company and Dana Corporation employees. Two of the original founders are still involved with the company's operations.
1983: STS moves operations to Westland, MI at its current location on Executive Drive.
1985: With a vision on combining CAE and physical test applications, STS merges with Structural Mechanics Consultants (SMC), located in Warren, MI. The company's name is changed to SMTC. Expansion requires a new building on Maple Road in Troy.
1987: SMTC is acquired by Defiance, Inc., who has recently gone public. At this time, SMTC begins operating under the name Defiance-STS and Defiance-SMC.
1988: Warren and Maple Road operations are consolidated into a new building in Troy Technology Park on John R in Troy. New test operation opens up to give company North-end test presence.
1990: Additional building added in Westland to meet expanding customer demand for simulation test services.
1995: The name is changed to Defiance Testing & Engineering Services, Inc. to better identify to customers the services that were being offered.
1999: Defiance, Inc., in its entirety, is acquired by General Chemical Group, Hampton, NH. Shortly thereafter, General Chemical spins off its technology based companies into GenTek (OTCBB: GETI). Defiance Testing & Engineering Services becomes a member of the Manufacturing Group within the GenTek organization.
1999: Defiance Testing & Engineering acquires Structural Kinematics (SK) from EG&G Automotive to greatly expand its simulation test capability. This also adds bumper impact testing, Class 8 Truck and Bus Off-Highway Equipment Simulation capability to Defiance's tool box. The Troy operation moves from John R to the SK campus at 894 and 950 Maplelawn and 1150 Maple in Troy.
2003: Defiance opens new lab in Troy, MI.
2007: Defiance Testing and Engineering is acquired by Ashok Leyland located in Chennai India. With this acquisition, Defiance can offer additional support services to compliment our testing capabilities with off-shore computer-aided analysis and design, problem-solving and consultancy.
